"There were people who didn’t think I should have been encouraged to give birth at such a young age. Or that maybe my parents didn’t make the best decision by allowing me to have a child so early,” Tanesha Boatright said. “But my message is you don’t know who you’re carrying."

On Tuesday afternoon, 14-year-old Gabriela Ramirez asked her parents if they knew what today was. 

“Martes,” her father Manuel Ramirez responded in Spanish — Tuesday. 

But Gabriela’s mother paused. “It’s the day that the people died,” she said. “The fire.”
